Mag Reviews

DRS OF FUNK: PERVERTED BREAKZ E.P. VOL 1 - Audio    Dr Prozak, Dr Riker, & Dr Caine provide the production skills for this tightly worked EP beginning with the rolling beats and analogue synth-play of Magnetic Porn, which manages to make some very familiar beaks sound kinda interesting. Kung Foo is a tough breakbeat workout, with a steppin break backed by sci-fi effects and wobbling b-line, while Vader provides some of the darkest, heaviest electro youll hear for a long time.

ELECRO CITY FUNKSTERZ: KILLERHURTZ E.P. - Audio
The track opens with shimmering sounds, underpinned by an over gained two step kik drum. Intelligent use of clean short hi hats and compressed off beat dry snare gets the track grooving along to the break down, featuring a well trimmed vocal snippet and a nice pulsating sub b line. Flip over for more energetic breakz, more rolling b lines, good percussive touches and vocal and scratch samples.

UPFRONT MAG 5/5

The E.C.F. are pretty much true to their name. Head for the AA side of this 12 and youll find 2 wicked tracks. The first is no holds barred acid breakbeat, which combines meaty beats with a simple, yet effective groove. The second is far more party flavoured, opting for an old skool electro groove, which will win flavour in bars and backrooms all over.

D.J. MAG JUNE 4/5

Three flavours of modern electro First Degree Frequency is the sound of future shock paranoia, a snarling electro missive that sounds like the darkest tech step immersed in liquid ketamine. Subsonic pairs an 808 with a supercharged 303 for max torque, and Dramatik heads back to 84 for true block party thrills. All electro, all good.

DR RIKER : FUTURE FUNK Phenomenon EP

Sound Surgery has been receiving quite of bit of interest of late, not least from the Radio 1 alternative crew of Steve Lamacq and Mary-Anne Hobbs.  Hoping to continue that trend, Dr Riker has come up with a 4 track EP of harsh electroid grooves.  To be honest, only 2 tracks count, ‘coz the others are just skits, but the two here are enough to showcase the Dr Riker sound.  For the fainthearted it isn’t and ‘666’ kicks things off with suitably warped bass, tight beats and wobbly sci-fi effects.  A wicked track for those who can play it tough.  ‘Kaos’ takes things one step further in darkcore, adding some crazy acid and tough tech step breaks for a full mash up session.

Drs of Funk - Perverted Breaks Vol. 2 [Sound Surgery] (UK) - Audio

Big Beat scarred us badly at US, the indie guitar loop - boom chik- rough production formula a is horror we never wish to relive. Thankfully Sound Surgery Records have avoided all these clichés in Perverted Breaks Vol.3. The opener "Maximum Perversion Remix" takes the standard dance floor formula and twists it into a psychedelic spiralling wall of sound workout, with a cool sample stating "if something gets in my way I go round it" an excellent piece of Zen philosophy - a rare thing in Breakbeat. "Electro Rock" is a quality Underground Resistance lite / Orbital styled electro number that would work well in a house set. On the flip "666 (Remix 2001)" is a fragmented drum & bass tune and as a bonus there are a few nice loops thrown in. Well worth picking up.DB

Perverted Breaks Vol. II Sound Surgery (UK)
Here's the follow-up to the Perverted Breaks EP which got support from Pete Tong among others. This latest 12" release from Sound Surgery has three breakbeat tracks to choose from, plus DJ tools. The strange but lovely Maximum Perversion Remix takes a head-in-the-clouds approach to big beat with its spacey, psychedelic take on 1960s style pop. This is what the Propellerheads would sound like if they were hippies ;) More psychedelica on the Electro Remix, working subtle, trancey keys and lovely vocal bits over shuffling electro beats. This tune is a great set-starter and easily the best of the bunch. Yet more druggy beats on the flip with the bad trip-inducing experimental nu skool breaks of "666 (Remix 2001)". The EP finishes with some nice loops for the DJs. All in all this is a great package of very different sounding breaks. Worth getting for the electro mix alone!

DR RIKER – FUTURE FUNK Phenomenon EP
AUDIO
BREAKS Get Ready Breakbeat Heads cause we have one interesting number here..Already receive excellent reviews from Radio #1's Steve Lamague, & Pete Tong. Dr. Riker begins his journey with spooky strings and moves effortlessly into rolling beats. All that can be said wouldn’t be enough to support sci-fi effects, tight percussions, and one wobbin' bass that comes out of nowhere!!Check IT..

Sound Surgery Dj Sampler (Sound Surgery 003)      This EP, containing four tracks is the product of a relatively new label. My pleasure, that the "A" side comes with two old fashioned breakbeatz. Both tracks are funk orgy for the ears (Dr's of Funk-Feelin Funky and Skinny Ashmatics-Homeboy), with great percussion, good basslines and supercharged with the good old Hammond organ. (I really see before my eyes the suburb club, where real b-boys and b-girls are rolling over to these tracks and some black guys with valuable jewelry are drinking their daily allowance at the bar) The other, "AA" side is a complete turnover. Two strictly experimental tracks are showing up here, with breaks, hedbanging bass and some panic! (D*Committee-Rabithole and Dr Prozak-Tortured Beatz). I like multi-purpose guns!
